Biography for

Bruce Janiak

 

After graduation from high school, Bruce attended Marietta College, then the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, earning an M.D. degree in 1969. He then went on to a three-year residency in emergency medicine (the first emergency medicine residency in the United States). After completion of his residency he moved to Toledo where he served as Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Toledo Hospital and during those 28 1/2 years he served nationally on the Board of Directors and as President of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He also served on the Board of Directors and finally as President of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Currently, Bruce is a Professor of Emergency Medicine and Vice Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. His primary interest in healthcare is the use of telemedicine to reduce healthcare cost and promote efficiency in the delivery of healthcare.

Bruce has been married to his wife Michele, a former RN, for 38 years. They have fourteen children and seven grandchildren. Bruce is involved with serving his church, and enjoys fishing, teaching, and jogging for recreation. He is also learning Spanish. He next hopes to successfully get the last of his children out of the house.

In high school Bruce enjoyed helping write the senior musical and says a teacher who influenced him was Mr. Bruening who taught Latin and told him he would never amount to anything. He comments, "What better inspiration could you ask for?"
